After a busy first academic year as a lecturer at @uniofglos.bsky.social, I'm finally finding the time to turn some of my thesis chapters into papers. Starting with trying to combine 2 chapters into one paper - just need to cut 10,000 words out! Wish me luck ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Last seminar before Easter and my students did a great job of summarising two really complex amnesia case-studies into posters! These are long, dense papers and they did really well in picking out the key information to explain their studies to the group ๐Ÿง

Finally, to acknowledge my hypocrisy! There are dozens of times when I've put my work above my wellbeing or overstretched myself. I've learned these tips the hard way so this is definitely a case of "do as I say, and not as I do" until I learn to listen to my own advice ๐Ÿงต11/11

Also, a big thank you to Alice Price, Georgina Wren, Teodor Nikolov, and Adelina-Mihaela Halchin who were my lovely co-panellists and shared some of these tips with the audience ๐Ÿงต10/11

๐Ÿ’กAttend seminar series, attend events run by your department, have an online presence and use it to maintain a connection with people you meet at conferences or training courses, reach out and connect with researchers whose work you've read ๐Ÿงต9/11

3โƒฃ Cultivate your professional network. These are your potential collaborators or mentors, future colleagues or supervisors, and people you can develop grant applications or share skills and knowledge with. It is essential to connect with people who can help you progress. ๐Ÿงต8/11

๐Ÿ’ก3 questions to ask yourself about any opportunity:

โ“Do I think I'll enjoy doing it?

โ“Is it likely to fill a gap in my skillset or on my CV?

โ“Is it a time commitment that I can comfortably make?

Ideally, the answer should be yes to all 3! ๐Ÿงต7/11

(also, you have a minimum of 3 years. It'll go by very quickly, but it really is a long time to do all those extra things beyond your research you might want to try. Just pace yourself.) ๐Ÿงต6/11

2โƒฃ Be selective with what you say yes to. Reviewing papers, joining committees, or organising events can all help you to develop useful skills and will look good on a CV. But progressing your research without overstretching and burning yourself out has to be your focus ๐Ÿงต5/11

๐Ÿ’กTake your annual leave, protect your weekends, make time for your friends and family, have a hobby or activities you like doing to give yourself time to decompress and help yourself feel like a person beyond your PhD ๐Ÿงต4/11

This time last week I was invited to sit on a panel of final-years and recent grads to share some tips about surviving and thriving through your PhD with an audience of first-year students (open to find out what those tips are!)๐Ÿงต1/11

Finally feeling like spring! ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ’๐ŸชปA great day - I love how scenic my walk to work is at this time of year, and got to interview some great MSc students who'll hopefully be working with us over the summer on stakeholder engagement and content analysis!

The first time I delivered this seminar (2020) I had no personal experience with qualitative methods in my own research. 3 1/2 years into a mixed-methods PhD, I feel much better equipped to give advice and answer student questions on this topic. (ft. my favourite coffee mug)

First seminar of a new module! Had a great student-led discussion all about intelligence, process overlap theory, and the validity and utility of IQ tests. Great to be back teaching!

Finished the draft of my general introduction for my thesis, it's all becoming very real (not sure whether that's terrifying or exciting?) ๐Ÿ˜ฌ It was a tough thing to write, but I feel like the ideas underpinning my thesis are much clearer to me now and I can see how it's all going to come together!
