14.11.2025 20:30 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Grateful to have joined the #mitnb workshop last week at TESC, Tilburg. Five days of inspiring talks, engaging hackathons, and great people from around the world! Thanks to MITNB and @tesc-tilburgu.bsky.social for organizing such an energizing and insightful event on timescales in #ESM research.

Thanks #MITNB for organizing this wonderful event and to everyone who joined the hackathons, discussions, and social events. It was exciting to see colleagues from around the globe think critically about measurement in ESM. I'm grateful to have been invited to give a workshop on careless responding.
14.11.2025 18:29 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0A quick (1000 words) read to enjoy with your morning coffee or afternoon tea:
"Psychology wants to stay WEIRD, not go WILD"
Why hasn't psychology diversified it samples, methods, theories, etc.? Because it doesn't want to. osf.io/preprints/ps...
Had a fun talk with @ranabkalkan.bsky.social at her "Faces Behind Papers" podcast. We talked about my academic journey (it started as an accident), current research (emotions, their measurement & the value of mixed-methods) & transition to parenthood (so intense!)

We made new friends and will work in the upcoming year on the different hackathons. Buckle up for the work that'll come out from the #mitnb consortium in the coming year. And if you wanna know more, find us on www.mitnb.org (4/4)
@tesc-tilburgu.bsky.social
Importantly, we did our best to create a friendly environment for everyone ranging from PhD students to associate profs. We went on walks in the forest, to a karaoke bar and an escape room together. I truly believe that these activities contribute to strong, fun and productive collaborations. (3/4)
07.11.2025 18:24 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We had hackathons that set up a formal model for measurement, others that compared Likert and VAS scales within participants, yet others coupling processes across multiple timescales. We had quant and quali people, large studies and single case designs, formal models and empirical data (2/3)
07.11.2025 18:24 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What a week! After 5 days, the #mitnb workshop has come to an end. We had a keynote on time scales and two workshops on careless responding and reliability. The central part of the workshops were the hackathons. We had super diverse hackathons, all designed to assess measurement in #ESM. (1/4)
07.11.2025 18:24 β π 26 π 10 π¬ 1 π 1Yes, I'm sure there's a big overlap in participants π€

1st day of #MITNB meeting at @tesc-tilburgu.bsky.social. Excited for the week ahead, where we'll tackle measurement issues in #ESM, e.g. modeling processes across timescales, building a formal theory on measurement, and evaluating statistical assumptions in #ESM data.
Go teamwork <3

I am hiring PhD candidates to study the psychology of attention & technology use at @tilburg-university.bsky.social.
We're looking for motivated & curious scholars with expertise in cognitive psychology and statistics, and offer a friendly work environment with great terms & benefits.

Two exciting ERC-funded PhD positions on attention and technology use with @matti.vuorre.com
Iβll be an (external) part of the supervision team and can highly recommend this department @tilburg-university.bsky.social

Congrats to my colleague @eeskevanroekel.bsky.social! Can't wait for the things she'll do in the next years.
Writing a grant is stressful and can feel lonely. I'm happy we did it together, without any cat fights & competition. Makes it easy to be happy for her, even though my grant wasn't awarded.
We built the openESM database:
βΆοΈ60 openly available experience sampling datasets (16K+ participants, 740K+ obs.) in one place
βΆοΈHarmonized (meta-)data, fully open-source software
βΆοΈFilter & search all data, simply download via R/Python

Preprints are read, shared, and cited, yet still dismissed as incomplete until blessed by a publisher. I argue that the true measure of scholarship lies in open exchange, not in the industryβs gatekeeping of what counts as published.
But we're still finishing up coding (since everything is coded independently by 2 coders and then we're doing a consensus for each participant). We have in total around 4000 responses on the question "how did you choose your response of (number) for (emotion)?" (2/2)
14.10.2025 05:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's still something we need to dig deeper, because the question is also what's a *meaningful* difference. So far, from my observation is that there are certain types of people with regard to what they base their ratings on. Sometimes they're consistent, sometimes it changes. (1/2)
14.10.2025 05:44 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hi Alex, thanks for reaching out! Sounds cool! I have someone else that did work on using different rating scales for the same construct to look at psychometric properties and see what people liked better.
Could you email me with more info, I'm very curious :)
D.f.maciejewski@tilburguniversity.edu
Thank you β₯οΈ
Same!
Omg they are not...I'll literally have different people saying they are not nervous at all, but then some rate 0, some a 2, some a 4 (scale 0-10). Also, people draw on so much different time frames for their ratings (very often not current events inform their rating but the past and future).
13.10.2025 11:30 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Is anyone going to #SAS2026 and would like to be part of a symposium on the measurement of emotions? I wanna present results from mixed methods study where we asked people to explain HOW they chose a certain number during each emotion assessment.

@leonievogelsmeier.bsky.social, we discussed this during the reading group!
Two new preprints on multilevel HMMs! Time series data is now pervasive in psychology and new methods are needed to model the dynamics in such data. Hidden Markov Models (HHMs) are powerful models for dynamics in which a system is switching between a number of discrete states.
22.09.2025 11:10 β π 68 π 21 π¬ 2 π 0Ohhhh it's finally out. Nice! Can't wait to read it
22.09.2025 19:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0π¨ New preprint: We compared 13 methods for detecting momentary careless responding in the WARN-D data (206k+ obs.). Tutorials guide you through each method. The takeaway? Diverging results, inherent subjectivity (to varying degrees), and a clear need for further validation.
