How specific are heritable symbioses?

And what can we learn from swapping obligate symbionts across host species?

We address this in our latest, led by @inespons.bsky.social & in our collaboration w/ @microbiome.bsky.social 🦠πŸͺ² Out today in @natcomms.nature.com!

In undergrad, I had a classmate present on the diversity of crabs (carcinization talk I think?). They put a picture up that was a horseshoe crab. I turned to my now-wife and said:

"Of all the crabs that aren't crabs they could have chosen, the possibilities are Limulus."

Been together 17 years. πŸ¦€

I don’t know who needs to hear Jesse Jackson leading the kids on Sesame Street in this beautiful call-and-response reminding them that every child is somebody, but here it is

'the company that maintains my boyfriend's AI persona has jacked up the price ten-fold' is pretty classic cyberpunk; that the persona or the relationship never meaningfully existed in the first place is a level of bitter irony that might be too much even for an often ironic genre.

Proud to carry on your legacy of studying evolutionary biology while going through it

In addition for every other valid reason not to get ChatGPT to do your journal peer reviews for you I heard today the argument that once you load an article into the programme it will become part of the training data set and you are thereby complicit in violating the author’s copyright.

I get why people are upset about this, but it shouldn’t be left to profit making companies to do this. Imagine if the β€œreturn on investment” was more healthy humans and not just more money for already rich people.

I had a recurring SNP in one of my first cloning projects. My boss insisted it was a sequencing error caused by new fangled floursent ddNTP Sanger seq. Checked with p33 and it was fine.

Hey bsky! I’d like to share some cool work I recently coauthored that integrates entomology, paleontology, and German cultural history. πŸ”ΆπŸœβš‘οΈ We discovered a fossil ant in the amber collection of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe! One of the great British tragedies of recent decades is the collapse of its university system. Wrecked by disastrous Govt policy experimentation followed by neglect, and a totally incompetent, vindictive executive class. Utterly fucked now. Well done pricks.

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test

Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs)

Good tech.

Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales)

Bad tech.
