Most reporting is just not up to the task of registering both that 1) the White House is *attacking* universities *as institutions* 2) the White House is working *with* universities’ boards to achieve *common goals* for remaking and weakening those institutions

There really is something special about what Zohran and Brad are showing the rest of the world what it still means to be a New Yorker and an American.
A Jew and a Muslim modeling a politics of mutual respect, rejecting cynicism. Human decency has been taking a beating but she's not out just yet!

Academic friends, if your NSF grants have been terminated by the administration, FABBS is hosting a webinar Friday about appealing the decisions. It's important that as many people appeal as possible to show we're not accepting this targeting of science. Link to the webinar registration is below.

Instead of "don't cut our funding," our message should be: hands off higher ed.
You want to restrict what professors can say in the classroom? Hands off.
You want to ban diversity offices? Hands off.
You want to cut our research funding? Hands off.
Hands. Off. Higher. Ed.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.
I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

World - yesterday
As someone who grew up under an authoritarian regime, I can offer one crucial piece of advice: time is everything. If you don’t stand up now—if you don’t protest, resist, disrupt, and refuse to comply—you may lose your country forever. Authoritarianism thrives on silence, hesitation, and fear. The longer people wait, the more entrenched the regime becomes, making resistance exponentially harder. Every moment of inaction is a moment the regime uses to tighten its grip. History has shown that those who act early have the best chance of reclaiming their freedom. The time to fight back is now.

Ask how many proposals have been set aside- that the panel is not able to review or consider? How were those decisions made? Are there any currently convened panels that would refuse to consider the remainder until the rest of complete, timely-submitted proposals (no matter the topic) are included?

Yes, the moral issues are very complex & I know many agency POs & staff’s values haven’t changed just bc the admin has. I think it’s a terrible position inside & I feel for them. Yet, we on the outside have options to comply right now, this cycle, when topics are being censored. It’s not easy.
09.02.2025 17:23 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
All those possibilities are real and without expert reviewers, the agencies could decide to not award funds or to cancel some competitions this cycle while they work out their process. I’d rather a process that includes all proposals than one that systematically excludes some based on their topic.

Totally. There are no good options. But, in a fascist state, is it *better* that the fascism is carried out by our peers, neighbors & those we like/admire? It feels like a slippery slope to argue that it’s going to happen anyway so we may as well have people we like/us do it.
