Letterboxd movie review: Review by Lowbacca Treasure Island 1973 Watched 19 Apr 2023 Lowbacca’s review published on Letterboxd: I have seen.... more than my fair share of Treasure Island variants. And this may be one of the worst, partially because even the unique things are often done better. For example, this isn't even the best "Treasure Island version where Jim has a rodent sidekick" or "Treasure Island version where it's a musical", as both of those go to Muppet Treasure Island. And what's most baffling is that the voice of Jim is Davy Jones of the Monkees, and yet he doesn't really sing, even in some of the songs that his character is present for (his only bit I'd say of real singing is the last song, which is a reality-defying duet). The dialogue is also weirdly rambly and the songs are generally... rough. This also really is laying into the "cliche cartoon sound effects archive" that I presume they had access to. The only notable things in here were some comedy from mentions of Davy Jones' locker (I'd like to believe intentional, but honestly I can't be sure here) and the Ben Gunn and Jim Hawkins song about speaking backwards that really feels like it needs to be redone with Yoda and Luke. This could, technically, have been worse.
