As far as I can tell, Carney is "generously" "only" cutting research funding by 2%. The rest is Harper-ish plans for international recruitment (vs. funding those of us already here) and directing research funding toward industry needs (specifically, defence).

Here's the biggest PSE story you haven't heard yet: the Canada Student Grant for low-income students is being cut from $4200/year to $3000/year as of next August. It's implicit in the budget tables but the government is too chickenshit to actually say so directly.

From government policy emphasizing only STEM or trades, to AI, to assholes with MBAs trying to turn every university into fucking McDonald's, it's amazing things aren't even worse. But we're on the edge of a generational downturn in education, and the long-term repercussions might be existential.

With music or sports or apprenticeships, we don't blink at the idea that it takes many hours to develop skills. With higher education, there are a bunch of fucking knobs who think you can just skip the hard work and all the hours and magically produce people capable of critical thought.

At this critical moment Canada is making poor decisions when it comes to funding for science and higher education. Austerity in this sector at this point in time will decimate the knowledge economy in all of North America. Funding a couple of high profile chairs is not going to solve the problem.
