24 years ago today, Tony Fernandez played his final MLB game for the Blue Jays.
He received a standing ovation as he walked to the plate at SkyDome to pinch-hit for Luis Lopez in the eighth inning.
He grounded out to first base against Cleveland righty Jake Westbrook.

44 years ago today, Bobby Mattick resigned as Toronto Blue Jays' field manager to assume the position of executive coordinator of baseball operations with the club.
Shortly thereafter, Bobby Cox was hired to replace Mattick as field boss.
44 years ago today, the Montreal Expos played their first postseason game.
Expos ace Steve Rogers allowed just one run in 8 2/3 innings to outduel Philadelphia Phillies ace Steve Carlton in a 3-1 win at Olympic Stadium.
Jeff Reardon got the final out for the Expos.
20 years ago today, John Olerud played his final MLB game.
Starting at 1B and batting seventh for the Red Sox, he went 1-for-2 with two walks in the Red Sox 5-3 loss to the White Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS.
P.S. Yes, I sometimes forget Olerud played for the Red Sox, too.

On May 7, 2010, a 47-year-old Jamie Moyer threw a shutout for the Phillies to break Niekro's record.
06.10.2025 11:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 040 years ago today, knuckleballer Phil Niekro tossed a shutout for the Yankees against the Blue Jays on the final day of the season at Exhibition Stadium to earn his 300th MLB win.
At the time, the 46-year-old Niekro became the oldest MLBer to throw a shutout.
It was only the second no-hitter in post-season history to Don Larsen's perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series.
06.10.2025 11:11 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 015 years ago today, in his post-season debut, Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies against the Cincinnati Reds in the first game of their Division Series.
Halladay allowed just one walk and struck out eight in the game.

On October 5, 1985, the Blue Jays clinched their first AL East title with a 5-1 win over the Yankees at Exhibition Stadium.
I was there and still have my ticket stub.

He passed away in January 2024.
24 years ago today, Tim Raines and Tim Raines Jr. became the second father/son duo to be in the lineup for the same MLB team when they start in the outfield for the Orioles against the Red Sox.
Raines Jr. batted leadoff and went 1-for-4, while his dad batted sixth and had an RBI.
Happy 71st Birthday to former Expos pitcher Bill Atkinson (Chatham, Ont.)!
In 98 MLB games with the Expos, he posted an 11-4 record and a 3.42 ERA.
Gary Carter once said Atkinson had the best curveball he ever caught.
He was also signed by the Expos on his 17th birthday, 54 years ago today.
Former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Mike Sharperson would've turned 64 today.
On May 26, 1996, Sharperson had been playing for the Padresβ Triple-A Las Vegas Stars when he was called up and was to join the Padres in Montreal. He died in a car accident on the way to the airport.
