Between small patches of moss on the rough, damp, black bark of Quercus kelloggii are the golden-brown fruiting bodies of Stereum hirsutum. Commonly known as “false turkey tail”, it’s named for its similarity to the proper turkey tail fungus, Trametes versicolor. Viewed abaxially in this photo, its hymenophore is centrally a cinnamon brown that softly fades to a yellow ochre and finally to cream at the edges. Numerous amber-colored droplets of fluid exude from the surface. The fruiting bodies range from sessile to fan shaped with wavy, lobed margins. One surefire way to tell that you aren’t looking at Trametes versicolor: while the more pileate fruiting bodies of Stereum hirsutum may share the same sort of colorful, hirsute zones when viewed from above (albeit generally with less warm tones), just take a look at the underside on these: unlike Trametes, there are no pores to be seen!

Remember that Tremella I posted and how I said it’s parasitic on Stereum hirsutum? Well, here’s a great specimen of the latter exhibiting some impressive guttation! While not uncommon, it’s definitely not something I see so often to this extent with Stereum compared to genera like Fomitopsis.
