Ready for more? @conrad-esq.bsky.social and @joelipsett.bsky.social are back to discuss the spicy bits of PLAINCLOTHES.
This includes a tryst in a greenhouse and a car, a glass shattering party, and the punitive dismissal of Andrew at film's end.
Oh, and there's a beard issue...a literal beard!
Our 'Cruising' theme continues with writer/director Carmen Emmi's 2025 film PLAINCLOTHES, starring Tom Blyth and queer actor Russell Tovey.
Topics include: internalized homophobia, more beards, awkward family dinners, and a frustrating/unnecessary visual motif.
ICYMI: @conrad-esq.bsky.social and @joelipsett.bsky.social dropped another #TIFF50 preview.
This time itβs A PRIVATE LIFE, which features bilingual queer icon Jodie Foster as an American psychoanalyst in Paris who becomes convinced one of her patients was murdered.
#Plainclothes does a great job of recreating the 90s without idealising them... Our latest episode is out now on www.patreon.com/cw/TheQueerG...

16.10.2025 16:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0To kick off our 'Cruising' theme, @conrad-esq.bsky.social and Joe check out writer/director Eliza Hittman's BEACH RATS (2017) featuring the feature film debut of Harris Dickinson.
Plus: shitty boyfriend behaviour, bad friends, and debate about why the film doesn't inspire an emotional connection.
Our 2nd bonus episode of TIFF is John Early's directorial debut MADDIEβS SECRET, in which the comedian plays a dishwasher who becomes a food influencer, which reawakens an eating disorder rooted in childhood trauma. Has the first-time director bitten off more than he can chew?

Today on The Queer Gaze: @joelipsett.bsky.social and @conrad-esq.bsky.social drop the first of several bonus episodes from #TIFF50.
First up: a review of Richard Linklater's biopic of Lorenz Hart, starring his 'Before Trilogy' collaborator Ethan Hawke, as well as Margaret Qualley and Andrew Scott
On Patreon, @conrad-esq.bsky.social and @joelipsett.bsky.social chat about the drama-free end, which doesn't entirely satisfy (no apologies again?!)
Plus: confusion about why Theo, Sieger's father, is so upset about the bike; made-for-TV intimacy; and praise for a gentle, simple coming out story.
So it turns out that JONGENS is actually a track and field 'Sports Gay' film.
Directed by Mischa Camp, this beautifully shot made-for-TV film was so popular that it was eventually shown in theatres and distributed around the world.
Plus: Marc's patience with Sieger, motorcycles, and another fair!

Oh yeah, and all of those Abercrombie abs!
Our last true "Sports Gay" entry is American football film RILEY (2023) from writer/director Benjamin Howard.
The problem (and most interesting aspect of the film) is that Dakotaβs sexuality doesn't "fit" in the narrative that he and his oppressive father/coach have constructed for his future.

Tomorrow on the pod: @conrad-esq.bsky.social and @joelipsett.bsky.social drop the latest episode in their 'Sports Gay' series with 2023's RILEY, about a closeted HS football player.
