After badgering Tony for several years he has sent me his Correspondence Chess games for the website, these include several which were published in BCM. Tony had great success in the time before computers became dominant in correspondence chess.

When I ran the HCA website I had a games page, where players sent me their games. I felt bad that these are no longer available, as the HCA website changed webmasters. I am starting to add some and the first game is a 2008 one by FM Moses Kawuma.

Malcolm Clarke has long been associated with Hants and SCL chess. His career started in the 1970’s, when he played for Eastleigh, but he also played in London for several years. Recently he has been captaining and secretary of Chandler’s Ford chess club.

Details of Hampshire vs Dorset 1946 chess match from the Western Gazette. Hampshire won the match thirteen and a half to six and a half.

Hampshire only played the two county matches in the 1946/47 season, and also lost Bournemouth chess club from the association, due to non payment of fees. Details on the HCA season on the website.

The West of England Chess Championship has been running since 1946. I have been sent 5 bulletins for some of the 1960's congresses, which have been scanned and added to the website.

Portsmouth Chess Club's 1st match - 1889

Picking up on Hampshire chess clubs again with details added on the Portsmouth chess club, which was formed in 1889 and members include Sir George Thomas, GM Peter Wells.
They have currently won the PDCL Div. 1 title 18 times, which is the record.

In the 1938/39 county chess season Hants had just three county matches. This was the last season of Match Captain Francis Elwell, who despite being 80 still scored 2 points from 3 games in the County matches, and won the Southampton Club championship.

My latest Minor Piece features Annie Mabel Gooding of Cheltenham, who played in ladies' chess tournaments over a period of 25 years, and had draws against Blackburne, Lasker and Capablanca to her name.

Hampshire win against Cambridgeshire from the 1937/38 chess season- Source Hampshire Advertiser.

In the 1937/38 chess season Hampshire managed to win the Montague Jones Cup after losing in the final the previous two years. They also fielded one existing and one future British Chess Champion in some of their matches.

Tony Corkett won the 1st of his 10 Hampshire Individual Championships in 1989. The championship was held over 2 weekends at IBM in Cosham. Article on the championship including 3 games is now available.

He seemed to reach a strong level for someone of that age though, as played high boards for Hampshire (up to bd 4).

The fact that there is a Chapman Cup in Kent, and there was one in Hampshire and Dorset links to this being named after the same person (as not many people want cups named after them?)

The references always seem to say CF for Dorset and Hants but C for Kent (did not play for Sussex against Hampshire). But the board numbers he played on do seem consistent with being one player (or someone of the same strength). The Dorset Individual Championship was originally the Chapman Trophy

All I had was the details which said he was also involved in Sussex before Dorset. I have a C Chapman playing for Kent against Hampshire from 1900 - 1911. If this is the same person may help? email is g.b.stuart@btinternet.com which may help discuss further?
