the helmets achieve a dulling of the senses by way of a Thick rag worn under the metal soaked in Alchemical mixtures to Muffle any noise that could reach the ears and Overwhelm the nose whilst sight is limited by the pinprick sized holes giving just enough sight to work.

Quite a quick Exploration sketch of an Ember mining helmet Hallgrim uses for its prisoners!

Raw Ember is said to whisper the secrets and songs of the cosmos to any who near it and thus it is important to dull ones senses to prevent madness, that is the purpose of this helmet.
