From a fan in the US, Nick was a treasure. His passion for Sega, Sonic, and all things gaming leapt from the pages. He was the everyman who made us all feel like we were at the table celebrating gaming with him. He made me look forward to every RG issue.
What a loss-- but what a mark he left, too.

SF Public Defender stops taking cases, citing anti-drug surge
The San Francisco Public Defender has stopped taking new cases, saying it is overwhelmed by drug cases it can't handle.
For the first time in more than a decade, the San Francisco public defenderβs office is so overloaded with cases that it has closed up shop.
The office will decline new clients on one business day each week.
Here's what it means for fentanyl cases:

$91M for police overtime? Even pro-cop supervisors are skeptical
SFPD says overtime makes up for staffing deficiencies and pays for increased enforcement asked for by city leaders.
SF supervisors scoffed overtime $ for SFPD after a blistering report claimed cops called out sick when working private security gigs.
βBottom line, police officers need to work for San Franciscans, not for private entities,β said supervisor @jackiefielder.bsky.social

Pelosi calls on Airbnb to drop $120M lawsuit against SF
Rep. Nancy Pelosi backed a proposal calling on Mayor Daniel Lurie to publicly condemn Airbnb for suing the city over its tax bill.
Mayor Lurie has made luring companies back to San Francisco a core tenet. What happens when some of the largest corporations are suing the city to challenge their tax bills during Covid? It's an uncomfortable and all too real dilemma @fitzthereporter.bsky.social π

The staff of the Standard spent months figuring out who runs this place and whittled it down to 100.

βThere is no additional timeβ: Lurie rushes to cut San Francisco budget
More than 20 departments failed to meet their 15% budget reduction targets, placing the cityβs financial planning in peril.
NEW: After city department heads failed or refused to make cuts, SF Mayor Daniel Lurie is wresting the budget from their hands.
βUnfortunately, reductions proposed by departments to date have been insufficient to close the deficit, and there is no additional time,β said the budget director.
