Completely agree, I did a bit of googling to double check and got totally lost in all the different names. You should be able to just get on any bus, tap on/off, and pay a reasonable fare without ever worrying about whether it's the right operator or if you bought the right type of ticket

But it has to be that specific ticket (paper or app), you can't tap on-off multiple operators for a £5 day ticket cap across all of them. Tried that once and ended up paying >£10!

They no longer accept each other's return tickets (and often don't sell returns at all) but you can buy a £5 'smartzone' pass for unlimited journeys across all operators for a day, which is about what a return would cost these days anyway
