Atmospheric CO2 has passed 430 parts per million.

The last time atmospheric CO2 was at 430 ppm was during the ancient Pliocene Era, three to five million years ago, and humans didnโ€™t exist.

I am very happy to see our paper out! Plant responses to many stresses are mediated by the same processes and I have long wondered how this relates to hotter droughts.

Buds are beginning to open. In the majority of temperate trees, all of the leaves and flowers that will grow this season were formed in the bud last year. That means that this year's growth is dependent on last year's weather. Opening buds are beautiful and worth a close look. What are you seeing?

Lightning, as in last night's dramatic storm (map) is a major natural cause of damage and death to old trees. Lightning can cause instant death (second and third photos - the same tree days apart), or damage a tree without killing it (fourth photo). Climate change is increasing lightning frequency.

Temperatures that switch on plant programmed cell death are now reality.
In our new viewpoint article @newphyt.bsky.social, we propose that studying the heat induced mortality at cellular level can contribute to strategies for heat stress mitigation.
