I do think there is a level of gatekeeping in comp Splatoon. But there is also a sense of “I beat Z so I’m entitled to Y”.

It’s not either or. I think it’s both.

That’s why I think it’s important to prioritize fun. Play with friends. Enjoy tournaments. Play X Rank. Don’t make this your everything.

Yes! I’ve worked in state government and local government in California. Love it. Salary is lower than compared to the private sectors but the benefits and security you get from it is worth it in my eyes.

Kirby Air Riders looks incredibly fun.
Metroid Prime 4 looks really promising.
Pokopia makes me feel that this could be this generations Pokemon Snap.

Fun games all around.

The last Black Ops game I played was Black Ops 4. Black Ops 2 was my favorite.

And to be clear, this isn’t to say the shift or evolution is good or bad, just an observation and reflection I felt when I watched the presentation.

Maybe exclusivity going away is good. Idk. But I do miss the days where gaming discourse was more than graphics, mechanics, etc.

I’m still confident there is a level of gamers out there that prefer the imagination aspect. I’m sure a lot of people have appreciated the work of Team Cherry with Silksong.

But idk. Maybe it’s just me getting older but it’s such a trip seeing how games AND discussions have evolved since the 90s.

This isn’t to say that I don’t appreciate the fully developed & beautiful games. I absolutely love the development of games like Ghost of Tsushima & Horizon and the immersion they brought to the table.

But somewhere I feel like the gaming space lost that identity of imagination in favor of realism.

It’s weird. I remember enjoying pixelated games on my Gameboy. Just enjoying it for what it was.

But now whenever I see discussion of games online, it’s not about the content itself sometimes but more about how the game looks.

I remember conversations with friends revolving around games (because they were exclusive). You have to get Xbox to play Halo. You have to get PlayStation for God of War.

Now, it seems the conversation has shifted to specs, power, speed, etc.

I’m sure Steam has exclusive but the majority of its presentation was on the hardware itself. It looks like a fantastic machine but it does make me wonder where console gaming is headed in the future.

I felt that back then, the discussion of consoles was different.

Steam introducing a console had me feeling like a relic in the gaming space.

When I saw the announcement, my first instinct was to ask “what exclusive games will it have?”

I grew up during the console wars. Sega vs Nintendo, PlayStation vs Xbox. But that question doesn’t matter as much anymore.

Not in my field (government) unless you’re an elected official, it’s probably not a good idea.

Seems relevant to bring this up again for Splatoon players

AI is making its way into the public sector. It may not be as drastic as the private sector implementation. But, my advice to anyone who is either in college or an entry-level candidate,

Develop skills AI cannot replicate.

Yes, I put FOMO as a blanket term. It could be due to discussions online, sales, etc.

I feel like one reason why some gamers have huge backlogs is that they buy the game at release because of FOMO. And end up not playing it or playing it as much because of limited time.

I have not played Majora. When I was a kid, I thought the mask was creepy so I skipped it. Definitely on my backlog.

Playing wind waker so maybe this list might be updated!
