New Methods for New Histories
9-10 July 2025

Online workshop that encourages new approaches to internationalism’s histories that go beyond the confines of traditional, state, and institution-centred archives in the Global North so as to bring understudied networks and processes into focus.

Main goal is to consider how we can write histories of internationalism that acknowledge the instrumental roles played by postcolonial, grassroots, marginalised, or simply unconventional actors, organisations and places. Does the meaning of internationalism itself change depending on where, when and how we look for it?

We invite team roundtable proposals and/or ideas for individual short presentations that reflect on new methods for histories of internationalism, drawing on historical case studies that emphasise underused archives, use old sources in new ways, consider alternative methods, and permit reflection on ethical and practical considerations. Our priority is to feature contributions from those who have considered a plurality of international participants and international forums. Examples may include refugee, indigenous, queer, feminist, agricultural, anti-colonial/postcolonial, racially hierarchical, anarchical, dissident, reactionary, radical and minority internationalisms.

We also hope that the online format permits global participation.

The conference is part of the AHRC-funded ‘Rethinking Internationalism: Histories and Pluralities’, led by Jessica Reinisch (Birkbeck), Ria Kapoor (QMUL), Daniel Laqua (Northumbria) and Margot Tudor (City St George’s). It seeks to build a community of scholars beyond (sub-)disciplinary silos and across different career stages to decentre histories of internationalism dominated by Anglo-American liberal internationalism. The project includes a mentoring scheme, plus ‘buddy’ mentoring for more established scholars

If you are interested in sending a participating, please contact ria.kapoor@qmul.ac.uk by 5 May 2025.

AI Jesus might ‘listen’ to your confession, but it can’t absolve your sins − a scholar of Catholicism explains In the future, a program like AI Jesus could be used to hear confessions around the clock. But with no experience of having a human body, it cannot engage or absolve human sins.

A Swiss church installed an #AIJesus in a confessional, but it wasn't actually hearing confessions. A #Catholic scholar explains why #AI can't replace human priests in granting absolution. https://buff.ly/3VvpdFk (Joanne M. Pierce, College of the Holy Cross) #religion

What is behind the explosion in talk about decolonisation? | Aeon Essays There’s more talk of decolonisation than ever, while true independence for former colonies has faded from view. Why?

I wrote an essay on decolonization talk for Aeon Magazine, sparked in part by the seemingly odd image search results for 'decolonization' when making posters for Ohio State's International History Seminar last year. @mershoncenter.bsky.social @osuhistory.bsky.social
