I've been reading LeGuin's essays going back to the 1970s and it's fascinating because she talks about people not taking sci-fi/fantasy seriously and that part of that is not having standards for how it's written . .

agree with all this 100% with the friendly addendum that more recess, time outside, time to move your body and not enforce unrealistic standards of sitting still and doing worksheets for young kids may be seen by some as boy-coded but is really needed and will benefit all kids

try poet! though that is so clearly not a profession; I always say "teacher" than they say "what age" and I say "college" and then they say 'oh, professor' then the worst question, which is "do they all just use chatGPT. Short answer is no but people don't like to believe that

I mean, what % of intellectuals debating what a "petty bourgeois" really is can do that because we had an immigrant great-grandparent grandparent own a small business so our grandparents/parents/us could go to college? a lot of us. def. me

and also that in the currently situation beaucracy pushing people into the semi-underground economy has huge risks for the workers involved

It is perhaps not irrelevant to the politics of this on the ground that a huge number of small business people in NY are recent immigrants, esp. south asian and middle eastern and muslim who were a huge part of Mamdani's base

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.

I agree in my field, literature I am open to the fact that where you are showing the results of whether a drug is effective, or announcing the discovery of a new sub-class of beetle, that is secondary. there the originality is "hey, I found a thing!" we expect undergrads to fake that.

100%! there's room for learning to do some kinds of academic writing in grad school but in undergrad what you are teaching is a simulacra of academic writing when you could be teaching real forms of something else
27.11.2025 20:32 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
yes! there is a place for neutral writing but that's when you have original knowledge and undergrads can't do that in the framework! not because they're not capable but because it's not what makes sense at that part
