What does everybody think of solar farms? In my opinion no more land that is viable for growing crops (lessening our reliance on imports) or planting carbon -gobbling trees should be covered until every suitable rooftop or car park shelter has been used. #greenenergy #greenparty.

Take a breath. Look behind the hostile headlines. What this government is on the verge of doing is to expand this one-in-one-out deal into, essentially, a safe and legal route from France. It is - and has always been - the only solution to dangerous crossings and what has been needed for years.

Unless the BBC stops promoting this tax-dodging fake patriot with 4 MPs and give equal airtime to the new Green Party leader (also 4 MPs) you can kiss goodbye to my licence fee next year.

You're probably right of course but never say never. Who would have predicted the meteoric rise in the polls of a new party with no real policies except to kill the NHS?

You're probably right but it's all down to how Labour performs in the next 3 years or so and how much media coverage LibDems get. Most people are centrists at heart.

If they get enough funding and media coverage I can foresee the LibDems leading a coalition parliament. Big increase in parliamentary seats last time.

@alastaircampbell2.bsky.social You recently played a voice clip on TRIP by a young man who said he was politically homeless, ruling out Corbyn's, Farage's, Starmer's and Badenoch's parties one by one but no mention of the rapidly growing LibDems or Greens from him or from you. How were they missed?

Not at all. Many EU citizens are black or mixed race. I was just trying to point out that with an aging population and falling birth rate the migrants we most need to boost the economy (not excluding others) are those who do not plan to retire here.

The immigration we need most is from Europe because Europeans tend to return to their home countries in retirement. Migrants from further afield are more likely to stay into old age, needing more working age people to care for them. Brexit was a mistake.

Inane "we need to train OUR young, not rely on migrants" Newsnight chat.
Median age was 37 in 2000, 41 today, will be 45 by 2050. Birthrate is 1.4 (minimum, just to tread water is 2.1). Immigration is a function of demography. Haldane knows this. We're not running out of skills, but out of people.

Yes, correct. If the personal allowance stays frozen and the triple lock remains eventually all basic UK pensions could be taxed. As an aside the tax threshold in Portugal is under Β£7,000 and the lowest state retirement/disability pension under Β£74 a week.

Those who registered for EU residency before the Brexit cut off date didn't need private medical insurance, just registered for state healthcare. It's an expensive move since.

Not the state pension as things stand, only private pensions. If one's total income exceeds the Β£12+k threshold the excess is taxable but nobody's state pension exceeds that at the moment.

I was thinking about the several Brits living rough near Benidorm who have no longer been able to get work since Brexit because they don't have the paperwork. Why didn't they apply for legal resident status when they had the chance?

Yes of course but then you become tax resident. Few appreciate how generous the UK's income tax threshold is, one reason why many Britons are living illegally in EU countries 'under the radar'.
