To me the entire thing just looks like Microsoft's AI branch is slowly taking over the company due to 'proven success' in the AI bubble factory; and they forced Phil and Sarah out. Phil took retirement to save face, pretending this wasn't forced.

It definitely wouldn't hurt to have some experience with the tools, concepts and software used in game dev.

Assembly programming and game modding are worth mentioning to support your interest claim in the position, but neither tend to be particularly significant parts of game engineering positions.

Game engines are all different, but they're not *so* different. Unless the job is highly specialized on e.g. Unity asset pipelines, or Unreal custom tooling, etc., it's probably more relevant that you have *some* experience with a game engine, than experience with the exact engine they're using.

Ask for feedback if rejected, so you know what you could work on.

Hard to comment on directly as it heavily depends on area and your standard of living. But don't let that stop you if you really want this. You can apply and do the math when you get an offer and take it from there. Literally not being able to afford rent is a pretty good argument to negotiate with.

We're the same people; most developers just want to make cool games; AAA, indie or anything in between.

We're lucky if we can land a job on either, and even luckier if it turns out to be stable for a couple years.

A lot of indie studios work on AAA games in the background, but that doesn't fit your narrative.

It's not AAA vs Indies, it's greed vs people.

Sit down and stop trying to pit devs against each other.

To be fair, I was employed while searching, so I could be fairly strict with what I applied to. But it does seem quite different now than 2019-2021-ish when everyone was struggling to hiring, rather than struggling to land a job 😔

@workwithindies.com is a good place to keep an eye on here, and gamejobs.co seems to be the most complete list of game dev jobs I've seen on a single website. But even then it took me the better part of a year to find a new job 😓

Game exec tries curry, likes it, buys the curry house.

Says to staff: the pizza restaurant across the street is making 50× your annual revenue, make pizzas now.

Staff complies, closes down for renovations, builds pizza oven, hires pizza cooks, reopens, pizza sucks ass. Exec burns down restaurant.

No studio survives canceled projects or underperforming launches anymore. Management changes direction faster than the average dev cycle and expects studios to keep up and turn a profit, somehow.

I'm genuinely fearful for my coworkers and friends across the industry.. 😓
