Not quite. You're studying it as a piece of Literature, it's reference to the history occurring at the time of the book/chapter written, and the manner in which it was written. The instructors for those courses were Jesuits, during the school year. The one for my summer course was a UU Pastor.

No, a large portion of American Literature is based on the Bible. If you don't know the texts, then you can understand the references, fully.

It's as helpful to know for English Literature as it is to know the texts that Muslim and Hindu writers pull from for their references. Or even the Vikings.

That fits with my Literature of the Bible course (required for English majors, elective for other majors). The non-majors had some interesting opinions and didn't understand parables.
