I've wanted to see Metropolis on the big screen for years, and I finally got that chance tonight at the Gateway. The 4k restoration is absolutely gorgeous! The seeds of so many sci-fi epics were sown with this film. The message still holds up- "The mediator between head and hands must be the heart."

The Life of Chuck is such a beautiful, thoughtful, life-affirming film. I loved every single second. Each actor gave a flawless, shining performance. This is quite near a perfect film.

I actually don't want to say much about the later parts of the movie. No spoilers here. Like I said, perfectly paced buildup leads to a key turning point, and BAM! Once things really get started they don't stop until the very very end. Oh and see it in theatres. Audience reactions are just the best!

And books have been written about how American music was truly shaped by innovative, groundbreaking black musicians. But I don't think I've seen or heard it so powerfully communicated as it is in Sinners. This was my favorite scene in the movie, and I haven't even gotten to the vampires!

But not before, right in the middle, we are given a sequence that is the most beautiful and inspiring meditation on music and culture. The movement and connection and emotion of this scene left me in awe. Future film classes may well use it as an example of the power of music and dance in film.

Everything about the film was practically perfect, no notes. The first part of the movie is a lot of setup, and feels more like historical drama than anything. But the superb pacing guarantees that nothing drags as we build up to the moment when the tone shifts into full on horror.

Sinners has to be the best film of the year so far! If the academy will acknowledge a horror movie, it would sweep through the categories at the Oscars- best actor, best screenplay, casting, makeup, set design, costume design, lighting, sound mixing, and OF COURSE best overall soundtrack.

One day I'd like to have something that came from his pop shop. But I think this postage collection is fairly evocative of the ephemeral nature of the art and artist.

According the ebay auction I bought it from, that rubber stamp commemorating 20 years since the Stonewall Riots was only available at one NY post office for a very limited time in 1989. The cachet itself was also designed by Haring for the 1985 International Youth Year.

Cleared off my Neil Gaiman shelf today... Photo 1 is what I'm probably going to get rid of. Photo 2 is what I'm either keeping (for now) or can't make a decision on just yet. This really hurts... I just can't stand looking at all of them anymore, let alone the thought of reading them ever again.
