It's heartwarming that people are watching my interview with @beckyltuch.bsky.social, checking out Stanchion, reaching out to say hi, saying they appreciate the way I run this magazine and press, and then buying some things. That's really, really lovely. And so very appreciated!

Q: How do we spot scammy lit mags (part 4)? "Decent, reputable, reliable, attractive, good-quality lit mags do not make you jump through hoops..."

Recently discovered Lit Mag News and had to give a shoutout to founder @beckyltuch.bsky.social for doing the needed work of calling out the scammy underbelly of the lit mag world. πŸ‘

It's hard enough being a writer without the writing world itself coming for you, too.

Editors are human β€” humans working on deadlines. Humans reading ungodly amounts of text in ridiculously short windows β€” and I’m sure, no matter what is said in the submission guidelines, there are editors and readers out there making snap decisions on the very first page. And here’s the hard truth: if your first paragraph is unreadable, if your formatting is too challenging, they may just skip the rest.
(The last sentence is highlighted.)

Are certain subjects too taboo for lit mags? "Taking a look at subjects that might be untouchable would seem to be important."

I enjoyed this substack especially the bit at the end in which author Kyle Seibel details that Electric Literature came close to publishing one of his stories--which would have been a career changer for him--but ultimately disliked the ending...in which the protagonist has sex with a deer. 1/
