Looking at it another way, lowering the cost can allow scholarly societies to carry out their publishing duties more efficiently. It's unfortunately also true that "labor-saving technologies" will impact employment. These things are all interlocking, but we need to increase pressure on profits.

It's a nice article, but I disagree with one point: "Our analysis also suggests that technological advances will not help." It's certainly true that _some_ technological advances will interfere, but others can help. Labor-saving technology can reduce the cost of publishing. arxiv.org/abs/2504.10424

I asked gemini to provide some pros and cons for different document formats like LaTeX, docx, markdown, and HTML. It gave a reasonable answer, though I didn't learn anything new from it. It offered to export the answer as a spreadsheet. Holy shitbrains it really does NOT understand the question.

I spent two years building a piece of infrastructure for open access publishing in CS arxiv.org/abs/2504.10424. I've gotten positive feedback from authors, but most are quite ignorant about how publishing works (even in computer science). Thankfully we don't have to accept Microsoft Word.😁

I was amused in reading the comments from the IACR survey that someone used the term "out house publishing" when I think they meant "out sourced publishing". Similar meaning, don't you think?

IEEE S&P has removed the decision types of "major revision" and "minor revision". Instead they have introduced the concept of "accept with reservations", in which there is a public metareview published with the paper. I think I like this idea.

the fact remains that typst has not gained much of a following compared to LaTeX. There are reasons and it's not a conspiracy.

How dominant is LaTeX in computer science? Very. It turns out that among the 1895 papers uploaded to eprint.iacr.org this year, it looks like 3 were produced from typst, 10 were produced from Microsoft Word, and three of indeterminate origin. The rest were various flavors of LaTeX.
