I know that I melt in the heat,
And I know to disappear.
The moment that you come is when I leave.'

Black and white wader, black top of head, few black patches on top of wings and tail, and black beak. Rest is white but depicted only by a bit of shadow.

Today I've been trying to see how little paint I can put on paper but still produce a bird😀. Here's one version.

A vanities still life painting, featuring at more or less center a human skull draped in a flower garland, sitting on a marble table or ledge. Surrounding it are flowers, a tiny framed miniature painting of a woman, some papers cover in handwriting, a pocket watch, a bouquet of flowers, two oranges or tangerines, one partially eaten; a stone tablet carved with characters in Hebrew (the 10 Commandments. maybe?); a thick book with a chain around the pages; and a small decorated casket filled with jewelry and gold coins. At the right edge of the painting, a sunflower peeks over the tablet. At the far left, a window is visible, through which the viewer sees a cloudy dark sky.

Well worth a listen:

He is awkward and does not know the ways
Of porcelain, of fork and mustard and silver"

This piece is unique among Hilliard's miniatures, because the sitter is placed against a black background.

The work that spoke most to me today -- maybe because I've been reading Proust -- was 'Embroidery' by Édouard Vuillard (1895-96). This is a detail; I'll post the full canvas in Comments.

In the background, a reaper is working with a scythe. • During this wildly productive week, VVG finished 10 paintings and five drawings (!) before an unusually heavy storm prematurely ended the late summer harvest in the south of France. • I did question whether VVG really used a variation on the modern slang expression “I killed it” and checked with the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. They confirm. 🤷♀️

Do you feel the warmth radiating from this portrayal of farmers at harvest time?
Vincent considered this one of his most successful paintings. He wrote to his brother Theo, "This canvas absolutely kills all the rest."
