#67 Frank Rigney is 'officially' credited with playing 15 games in 1959. The game he 'missed' was the August 17, 1959 game in Calgary. The Winnipeg Free Press showed a picture of Rigney in the sports section and the article talks about how Rigney moved to Offensive End after Frank Gilliam was injured. The 'game played' error is the result of 'research' based on the roster published in newspapers. Based on article published in the same newspapers and backed up by video, there are numerous errors in the published roster for the Blue & Gold for that game.

Frank Rigney anchored the LT position for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for 10 seasons (1958-1967)

OTD in Jets History March 5, 1988. Another big night for Dale Hawerchuk and Jets against the Maple Leafs. Hawerchuk ties Jets record for points in a game with 6 in 10-1 win. The 2nd of 3 times Ducky would have a half dozen points in a game and all were v Maple Leafs in Toronto

The play that crashed the #CFL stats system in 2011
#ForTheW #PullTogether
Unfortunately, the βBy Ruleβ rule still prevails, which results in some oddball play scoring.
The newer stats systems treat each play as a series of events. The stats system will determine who gets credits for a score based on who had possession during the scoring event.
Since then, the CFL has adopted 2 new stats systems. CFL Connect (used 2016-2022) probably would have been able to score the play properly. CFL Live Stats (2023-present) can score the offensive stats properly as long as the fumble recovery is scored as the goal line.
03.03.2026 20:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As a result of this play, a βBy Ruleβ rule was established for any ball that is fumbled into the opposing teamβs end zone. The change of possession is deemed to have happened at the 1 yard line to avoid the issue of crashing the stats system.
03.03.2026 20:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The βsolutionβ to the problem was to give Volny a 6 yard run to the T1 then enter a lateral to January who then got credit for 1 yard rushing and the rushing TD. The fumble & OTFR were added to a previous play with a note indicating that those details actually belonged on the scoring play.
03.03.2026 20:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Back then, stats details were entered for the play and a scoring time was entered to generate the score. The stats system would then determine what type of score was made & who to apply the score to. There was no option to credit the score to a specific player.
03.03.2026 20:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0When the play was entered properly, the stats system gave Volny with a 7 yard TD run. It then threw up and crashed because it didnβt know how to treat the fumble on the play.
03.03.2026 20:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Any yardage (TD) gained by the recovering player will accrue in the same category that the original ball carrier accumulated yards in prior to the fumble.
03.03.2026 20:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In the CFL, when a ball is fumbled, the ball carrier is credited with any yardage gained/lost while the ball bounces to the point of recovery. The player who recovers the ball gets credit with an own team fumble recovery.

Carl Volny carried the ball from T7 to T4 where he fumbled. The ball bounced into the end zone and was recovered by Glenn January at the -10
Proper scoring would result in a 7 yard rush & a fumble for Volny , while January would be credited with an OTFR & a rushing TD with 0 yards gained
#69 Glenn January celebrates his only CFL TD This is the play that crashed the CFL stats system
Glenn January celebrates his only CFL TD, scored September 24, 2011 when he recovered a Carl Volny fumble 10 yards deep in the Argosβ end zone
All attempts to properly score this resulted in the TD being awarded to Volny and then the stats system would crash!

#70 Jeff Boyd returned to the Blue Bombers midway through the 1986 season. He joined a receiving corps that included three 1000 yard receivers (Murphy, Tuttle & Poplawski). Boyd accumulated 619 yards in just 7 games that year.
#70 Mike Holmes was a favourite target of Dieter Brock 1977-1982. Unfortunately a serious injury limited his 1981 season to a few plays and he was never 100% when he returned in 1982.

Farrell Funston wore #10 in the Fog Bowl. Hamilton had an OT wear an eligible number which allowed them to run a tackle eligible play by shifting players around. When the CFL chose to permit this, the Blue Bombers chose to fight fire with fire by doing the same with OT Frank Rigney. Neither team used the tackle eligible play in the game.
Farrell Funston wore #71 for all but one game as a Blue Bomber. In the 1962 Grey Cup, Funston wore #10 while OT Frank Rigney wore Funston's #71.
