My position is that there is no re-closing Pandora’s Box. We are well past that. It has been enmeshed into too many pillars of society: education, legislation, defense, etc.
Regulation is a great hope, but safety is no longer a promise. Have to start acting/preparing ourselves with that in mind.

But I will throw money at games that still try. Cause at the end of the day I live for that, and many others like me also will. That's what fandom is there for. We'll write, draw, sculpt, cosplay, and act the cringiest shit for the love of the game.

I do support the indies doing it ofc, but like the article said, romance is very much "an afterthought".
Frankly I don't see an evolution, where romance is to have such weight, to ever exist in AAA anytime soon. Often it's a weird compromise of getting it done "good enough" or not having it at all.
To have this across all romances, however, is costly. Balancing such plotty weight for a game that may have 2+ romances is expensive to write, voice, mocap, animate, etc. Convincing top for resource allocation on content that only reaches a small percentage of players? In AAA, a harder sell.

Personally why I liked the Solas romance. The man was so integral to the plot that the relationship's gravitas blends so effortlessly.
The relationship evolves into a living consequence that
1) re-contextualized all your actions
2) questioned your ability to lead, and
3) gave reason to fight.
On 2, I'll use Dragon Age as example. A writer is specifically assigned to write a romance. The dialogue tree has specific places where a LI will respond, but it's always reactive. An exclaim, ranting, flailing, etc... but not affecting the plot's progression in any meaningful way.

Feel like it comes down to two core things:
1) The misunderstanding that romance = sex, which gamifies intimacy in a way that belittles companionship (and in doing so, the main plot)
2) Games lacking either resources or forethought to have relationships running synchronously with the main plot
