Absolutely. But after the collapse of the Roman Empire, western kingdoms specifically did not have access to the classics, so built their laws based on ‘Christian’ teachings. It was called the dark ages for a reason.

What about ‘thou shalt not kill’?

It’s unfair to say that liberal democracies are not underpinned by the principles of fairness, compassion etc. They are Jesus’ teachings, like the religion or not.
