Best thing about new Leagues Cup format: it creates actual drama. Because teams MAY need to win all three "Phase One" matches to earn knockout play. Only 4 of 18 from MLS go through to quarters.

But then big talent annually off-loaded right in middle of the GD season!
Yes, makes sense from business perspective. But it makes ZERO sense to casual American sports fans -- which hurts MLS growth.

Don't let me influence you, but I'm NOT a fan. The team walk-outs are a great tradition (not to mention a fantastic visual) of our game, and I hope they return for next summer's World Cup

I always tried to be fair as a writer, to players and coaches - to layer in context and not lazily be over-the-top, reactionary hot-sports-take guy.

A meek Inter Miami 1st half - felt like we were watching the slow death of Miami/Messi project. Halfway through group stage w/ ZERO goals.
But a spirited 2nd half and a (what else!?) stunning FK Messi goal and ... well, this thing might have life after all.
