I am consistently inspired by science communicators like Brian Cox and @seanmcarroll.bsky.social - it is so important (now more than ever) to share the wonders of science with the world. Other academic disciplines should learn from this - keeping ideas locked away in the ivory tower helps no one!

'Decoding the Cosmos' is an atheist's take on the relationship between Christian theology and physics. The difference is, I'm not trying to use science to disprove religion. See an extract below.

I'm often surprised at how much researchers are using LLMs for intellectual work. It's not that I disapprove, or at least not on principle. It's more that I'm surprised at the trust being placed in the process. And by that I don't just mean LLMs can give wrong information...

The stuff Jeffrey Epstein’s friends felt comfortable saying and drawing in grotesque detail with their names attached knowing they would not face consequences is the kind of thing I think of when I think about rape culture and how sexual violence against girls and young women is actually glorified

I find it very disheartening that however hard you try to create pockets of joy, supportiveness, and collaboration, the competitive and toxic nature of academia sometimes finds a way to seep through. I wish there was a way to fundamentally change this ugly aspect of academic life.

It’s important to remember cisgender women getting hurt by this is a feature not a bug as it both makes trans women fearful of existing in public and signals to cis women how they must act to be protected by the state.

Welcome to Britain 2025: where a musician's words cause more outrage than the murder and horror in Gaza | Owen Jones The issue of what happened at Glastonbury is obscuring the outrage about real bombs and actual death, and I think that is deliberate, says Guardian columnist Owen Jones

There's a national firestorm over Bob Vylan's chants about a genocidal army.

Rather than about the mass butchery of innocent people.

It is depraved, it is grotesque, it is beyond shameful.

New column about the world turned on its head πŸ‘‡

What's astonishing about this is that "violence against a military force currently shelling civilians at food distribution points in the occupied territory they have been starving out" becomes equivalent to "calling for a genocide". It's just an insane moral reversal of the actual situation.

In 1975, when Animal Liberation was published, I thought that simply telling people about the cruelty of factory farming would lead to meaningful change. But 50 years on, I’ve had to reckon with a difficult truth: facts alone are rarely enough.

Last week I spoke at a conference for sixth formers on the question 'Is God Dead in the 21st Century?' - I argued for atheism, of course. It was such a pleasure to meet so many bright, engaged, teenagers who are hoping to study philosophy and/or theology and religion at university!
