Iโ€™m already on number three for this season! Interesting that Netflix NZ has some actual Hallmark movies (mostly very recent ones) on offer this year.

So far my tally is:

Cringe but ok: 1

Actually not too bad!: 1

Not sure Iโ€™ll finish it: 1

A child afflicted with the pox of hundreds of ranting red-faced David Seymours on their skin

Title card: The other infectious disease ripping through schools.

We have removed requirements for curriculums toreflect local tikanga mฤori, matauranga mฤori, and te ao mฤori.

Teachers need to stop politicizing strikes and go back to being underpaid and overworked!

We've removed te reo from kids books. They're tough enough for me to read as is!

Serving kids fresh food from local providers is woke!

I don't know how teacher only days work, and I refuse to learn!

Kids are being dragged out of math kicking and screaming and forced to learn mฤori!!!

Teachers are incorporating te reo into math! That's one step tahi, rua, too far.

We need to prosecute parents for truancy!

I'm serving kids food that's eiter moldy or will burn them.

Kids learning the negative and long lasting effects of colonization will leave them too informed as future voters!

World expert in air quality and COVID wins Australia's top science prize Lidia Morawska, an internationally renowned expert in air quality and its impact on human health, has won Australia's most coveted prize for scientific research.

"more than 90 per cent of the time we are indoors, be at home, office, school โ€ฆ so it is indoor air which is the most important for our health.

"This is the problem right now โ€” we must establish indoor air quality standards, and mandate those standards."

Iโ€™m a sucker for cheesy Christmas movies. I think itโ€™s partly homesickness for the snow & decor of Canadian Christmases, although my family homes were NEVER the explosions of red & green of these movies!

So Iโ€™ve started watching the 2025
cheesy holiday movies on Netflix. Some of them are SO BAD! ๐Ÿ˜†

Last-minute Christmas Cake
This fuss-free recipe, from our regular columnist Janice Marriott, has become a NZ House & Garden favourite. It makes a well-flavoured, moist cake that is fabulous with or without icing.
1kg mixed dried fruit (include prunes if you like a rich, dark colour)
ยฝ cup liquid, either sherry, rum or tea 200g butter
2 cups flour
ยฝ cup sugar
ยฝ teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
2 eggs
ยฝ cup milk
ยผ cup honey
Soak dried fruit in the liquid overnight.
Next day, rub butter into flour in a big bowl using fingertips (or process in a food processor then transfer to a bowl). Add sugar, baking soda and salt then mix in the dried fruit.
In another bowl, mix eggs with milk and honey. Add to main mixture and stir (with hands is good). Put into a lined 23cm tin and bake at 160ยฐC for 2ยฝ hours.

Hereโ€™s the recipe I use, for anyone who would like a simple but reliable one to try.

Every year my fruit mix is a different combination (but never raisins or currants!).

I always put a tall โ€œcollarโ€ of baking paper around the inside of the tin to help prevent the top from browning too much.

Itโ€™s pretty great! There have been other post-quake hospo developments around the city (including fairly nearby) but I suspect Riverside will be the longest success, largely helped by its fantastic location.

PSA: just saw my GP and he went out of his way to check that Iโ€™d had a measles vaccine. He reckons most New Zealanders that arenโ€™t up to date on MMR will have measles in the next few months.

Sounds like the epidemic is going to reach ลŒtautahi soon.

It looks like a converted industrial building but is a new build! Previously the Re:Start container mall (which was pretty cool) was located on that piece of land, after being cleared post-quakes.
