Growing up in Turkey, one of the most common journalistic genres we came across was the stories of foreign (mostly Western) women being enchanted by the magnetic charms and sexual powers of Turkish men. Some of these women supposedly came all the way from Australia in search of Turkish husbands.

Yesterday, I presented a paper on The Lustful Turk’s film adaptation (Byron Mabe, 1968) at the Centre for Media History conference in Sydney. H/T to Turkish author Murat Toklucu for the title “Turkish men and other miracles” which is the title of his book in Turkish.
