To bide my time I started watching The Beast in Me last night. It's also quite good! Psychological thrillers with queer female protagonists is apparently my jam. Perhaps my old obsession with Killing Eve should have been my first clue.

Interesting. You have older siblings, yes? What about J? I like this theory that your siblings influence what generation you identify with (h/t @kakaty.bsky.social).

I love that they are doing that and want to see it SO BADLY. Stupid geography.

This is a really interesting point I hadn't considered before, that older siblings change your mindset. I got SO MUCH pop culture education from my older siblings, so it makes sense they would affect how you place yourself in a generation (or not).

We do scratcher tickets here too (my parents did them for us). One of my kids requested a stocking FULL of scratchers this year. πŸ˜‚

Related: my 13yo has recently gotten into 80s/90s pop culture. It’s fun watching her discover the things I also loved and see them through the lens of her experience.

The original Gen X-ers offer some clarity: Douglas Coupland, the author of the 1991 novel "Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture," which gave the cohort its name, was born in 1961. The title, he's said, was inspired by the cultural historian Paul Fussell's
"Class: A Guide Through the American Status System" (1983), in which Fussell designates an "X" category of people who, as Coupland once put it, "wanted to hop off the merry-go-round of status, money and social climbing that so often frames modern existence" β€” an inclination shared by the trio of disengaged characters in Coupland's book. The media theorist Douglas Rushkoff, who edited 1994's "The GenX Reader" was also born in
1961; he tells me he's part of "original Gen X ... the Michael Stipe generation of Gen X-ers," referring to the R.E.M. frontman (who was born in 1960), and agrees the dates have been retroactively tweaked. When I reach the other Gen X Doug - Coupland - by phone in Vancouver, he simplifies the entire issue for me: "If you were born in the '60s and you don't remember the J.E.K. assassination, you're X. Boom, it's a given." I am unaccountably relieved. It would have been a tad too Gen X if the person who coined the term was excluded from it.

And I have argued this exact point for YEARS. My siblings were all born between 1960-1965 and I consider them all to be GenX. Obama & Kamala are GenX. You can’t tell the guy who literally invented the term GenX that he’s not a member.

Is Gen X Actually the Greatest Generation?

GenX is certainly not perfect (especially when it comes to politics) but this is a lovely ode to all that is great about us.

My 16yo & his friends are (re)watching Breaking Bad & I was telling him that in hindsight we were glad BB was once-a-week because every episode was so stressful. But with Pluribus I want to know what is happening so badly I can’t wait. I’m hoping the teens join me when they finish BB.

Over the Thanksgiving break I got hooked on Pluribus (thanks @antiangie.bsky.social). I finished episode 5 last night and discovered I have to wait until FRIDAY for another episode. What in the traditional "once-a-week" tv format is this shit?

I think it would be really cool if Senator Mark Kelly was elected POTUS because (1) Astronaut president! and (2) He’s an identical twin so we could have a real life body double situation like the classic 1993 movie Dave.

Eight! Advent calendars! Ready to go for December 1. This year’s calendars have chocolate (x3), caramels, jam, French condiments, tea, and a puzzle.

Yes, the teens are still super into advent calendars (so is this middle-aged lady, but I share).

I rode that DEN>IA route years ago & enjoyed everything but the multi-hour delays. When I showed up at Union Station & asked if the train was on time the Amtrak employee just laughed at me. I think I arrived 8-10 hours late. I hope things have improved since then. πŸ˜…
