I was discussing "Salty's Stormy Tale" with my non-TTTE friend and when it came to the conflict, she stops me and says: "Percy has no right to make fun of someone else; just look at him!" and I about died. I always imagined the Series 7 crew to be friends, and this subtle moment I think may be evidence of it. Emily and Murdoch both look away when TFC asks for an engine to work the fishing village. I think this implies they were letting Arthur take it for himself. :) #ttte #thomasthetankengine

The Big Engine Trio from Series 1 are brought back together in this scene, and are portrayed surprisingly faithfully. James and Gordon make obvious digs at both Whiff and Emily, while Henry (typically the kindest of the 3) only gives Whiff a back-handed compliment. Later on, Gordon and James refuse to help Emily in a similar manner as this scene.

While I don't like that we barely see their faces AND they aren't named, I don't think Molly, Neville, and Murdoch were random choices to be stock-filler characters to tease Emily. The three, like the Big Engine Trio, are large, powerful, respected engines. Keeping in line with their much less callous personalities, none of them sling insults and only laugh at the pair. It feels poignant for Molly and Neville to divulge in poking fun at Emily, since Emily herself caused grief for both of them in Series 9 (on both of their first days!), so I imagine it would be cathartic for them to laugh at Emily when she's in disgrace. While Murdoch was never wronged by Emily, Murdoch's inclusion here makes sense since up to this point, Murdoch is THE largest and most powerful engine on the island. I probably should have clarified earlier, but these traits (especially in the HiT Era) are conflated with popularity and status. I wonder if HiT was trying to put together a secondary Big Engine Trio with these 3? It makes sense, all 3 of them have quieter, subdued personalities...I'll have to peruse some fanfiction later for content.

And of course, when the plot climaxes, the most respected and high class of all engines is the one to admonish Emily: Spencer. While part of the reason Spencer is frustrated with Emily is because she (like your typical HiT Era protagonist) slacked off on her work over petty personal conflicts, it's also clear he holds disdain for the work Emily's been assigned. He also immediately pegs Whiff as being below him, but Whiff does manage to gain Spencer's respect when he helps Emily...do the job they were supposed to do hours ago. Strange logic aside, I think Spencer's role here encapsulates that if you impress a Big Engine enough, you can earn their respect (think Series 3 Oliver's 'resource and sagacity'). I'll also take this as a moment to analyze Emily as well. Especially in the HiT Era, Emily was classified as a Big Engine herself (even usurping Henry's role on occasion!) and I think this is an interesting study in how she applies to that role. Just in this episode alone, she's pretty awful to Whiff, a smaller engine that she has a negative opinion on at first meeting. This is clearly in line with the negative traits prescribed to Big Engines, but by the end of the episode Emily proves that she's more layered than that. She finds Whiff and the first thing she does is apologize to him, and later on explicitly states she's working together with him. Emily's kinder side, in my eyes, makes her complex as a Big Engine, similar to Henry. She's not as rude as Gordon or prideful as James, but also isn't as quiet as Murdoch or as shy as Molly. She sits comfortably in the middle with Henry, which means she can fall into either side. This makes her pretty versatile, in my opinion. What was I talking about? Oh, right, Spencer...yeah that's all I had to say on him. Apologies for the Emily tangent but...that's what I'm here for!

I'd like to take a moment to analyze the side characters in "Emily's Rubbish". All of the engines that tease Emily are all also big, mainline tender engines like Emily herself. Specific analysis on each engine will be in their respective Alt texts! #ttte #thomasthetankengine #HiTEra
