Call for papers for the first Rennes In Silico Biology Day Abstract submissions until 25 September 2025 This symposium will be held on the health campus of the University of Rennes on Tuesday 25 November. Dedicated to bioinformatics, it is organised as part of the IGDR's cross-disciplinary BIS2 (In Silico Biology) programme. Appel à communications pour la première Journée de Biologie In Silico de Rennes Soumissions des résumés jusqu'au 25 septembre 2025 Ce symposium se tiendra sur le campus santé de l'Université de Rennes le mardi 25 novembre. IGDR Keynote Lectures with Pr. Gabriel Waksman, University College London & Birkbeck College Thursday 3 april at 11:00 AM Amphi A - Building 2 - Villejean Health Campus « Structural and Molecular Biology of Bacterial Conjugation » Bacterial conjugation is the unidirectional transport of genetic materials from a donor to a recipient cell. It is also the principal means by which antibiotic resistance genes spread among bacterial populations. It is mediated in the donor cell by three major complexes that work in concert: a DNA-processing machinery called the relaxosome, a double-membrane spanning transfer machinery termed type 4 secretion system (T4SS), and an extracellular appendage termed pilus. While the structures of the T4SS and pilus are known, that of the relaxosome is not. Here, we describe the cryo-EM structure of a fully assembled relaxosome encoded by the F plasmid. This structure shed unique insights into a crucial step in the mechanism of bacterial conjugation, that of DNA processing and transfer. Gabriel Waksman is professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at University College London (UCL) and professor of structural and molecular biology at Birkbeck College, University of London. His research focuses on the mechanisms of bacterial secretion, using mainly X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy. Team building among proteins: how oligomerisation of SIAH1 promotes its ubiquitin ligase activity. By describing how SIAH1 forms polymers within cells, a collaborative work by the Huet group at IGDR and the Suskiewicz team at CBM, improves our understanding of the mechanisms by which protein aggregates involved in certain neurodegenerative diseases get cleared by the cells.
