Needless to say that every visit I’ve made to this extraordinary funerary complex reveals new delights made by the different light depending upon the time of day & year. The space is actually incredibly sparse in real life; the detail like the physical manifestation of repetition & reinvention in a fugue by Bach..The normal act of vanity in death is seemingly reversed with this extraordinary act of patronage by Onorina Brion, wife of Giuseppe Brion, the founder of Brionvega Electronics. The entire space is almost taken up with either grass or water, making the veins of off-form concrete & the exquisite detail the outline of the parti. With this astonishing jewel of both design & craft, is the little known fact is that this is the sole project that Scarpa worked on with Porcinai, the landscape architect having worked on various projects for the Brions, including their factory outside of Treviso, & Onorina’s own house in Portofino. I haven’t watched many movies at the cinema this year, but I think all Oscar contenders. ‘Weapons’ and ‘Bugonia’ I appreciate, but don’t want to see again. ‘Mickey 17’, ‘Caught Stealing’, and ‘One Battle After Another’ are an absolute blast and could watch them over and over.
