Maybe I'm overthinking the number thing, but I think the closer you can get to "does this feel authentic as a jersey" increases the chance it's going to come out really well and resonate with fans. If you're designing jerseys without a specific wrestler in mind, obviously this kind of issue is moot

I don't have any experience with design, but from my persective the hardest part of nailing an American football jersey is the number dominates so much of the real estate so you have to find a number that makes sense for a wrestler to ring true. You can avoid that with kits, hockey jerseys, etc

And he's played by Kristofer Hivju, which folks find adds to the appeal

I think hockey jerseys could be easier to nail the design of to a really satisfying degree and look excellent layered over a hoodie, but the problem with those and every style of jersey is they're a niche of a niche item and that probably has a small market unless sold first party

I have similar feelings about football kits as merch. BLCKSMTH has really nailed the GYV kits with their clear 80s Liverpool influence and their Ospreay kits with a clear home and away look, but the others just miss the mark for me.

I think there's a truly untapped market for American football jerseys as merch (only one I can think of right know is Kevin Blackwood's but that one's a bit safe imo). I also think it's hard to really nail a jersey as merch design but some thoughtful decisions can really knock it out of the park
