I talked with @drgilbz.bsky.social about my PhD research on the glaciers there, why they matter for climate and ecosystems, and how theyβre changing in a warming world. Already not on track to meet our (too weak) climate targets, an extra runway at Heathrow will cause a vast increase in emissions, driving deaths and health issues for Londoners and the world.
We didnβt know East Antarctica was melting like this.
Excellent new video from Dr Gilbz @drgilbz.bsky.social
Iβm delighted to share that our new paper is now out in @natclimate.nature.com! Our long-term, monthly Antarctic-wide dataset of surface meltwater shows that the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is becoming increasingly prone to surface meltwater ponding.

πNEW ANALYSISπ
Just 3% of the UK population take 30% of the fights. When this government expands UK airports, this 3% benefit the most.
Who are these people? Introducing... the ultra-frequent flyer. Our research with Possible. 1/5
We need a frequent flyer tax not a 3rd LHR runway.
2.8% of UK people are ultra-frequent flyers, 6+ flights/year,
7.7% are frequent 3+ , 17.1% regular 2+
& 72.4% fly once or never in a year.
Astonishing: 3% of UK people take 30% of all flights
According to a new report, these ultra-frequent-flyers, UFFs (>6 flights/yr) were responsible for 63% of new passenger traffic over the last 20 years.
New infrastructure is largely fulfilling the carbon burning habits of this tiny minority
It may be a small chance, but it's a chance nonetheless.
A year of average global temps above 2Β°C is now possible in the next 5 years, according a new report by the @wmo-global.bsky.social

Come say hi, I'm friendlier than I look (it's just the resting cockney face, promise).
Please share with anyone who'd be up for it π
