I was laid off from Teen Vogue this week, alongside multiple other phenomenal team members.

At our Summit, I was asked how it felt to be 1 of 2 Black women left and what that meant for representation. Now, there are no Black women at Teen Vogue and that is incredibly painful to think about.

About Teen Vogue,
I don't read or care much for a lot of mainstream media, but Teen Vogue is the only consistent non-Native media outlet that has always done an incredible job reporting on Native issues and giving our talent a platform to shine and not just to fill their "diversity" quota.

Under Bari, the following have left:

-Head of standards and practices, Claudia Milne
-CBS Evening News anchor, John Dickerson
-CBS Morning news anchor, Gayle King
-CBS News head of talent, Laurie Orlando

Which means Bari's key hires will shape who is seen on TV, what stories are chosen.

I want both but I can't help saying that The Acolyte deserves it more because of what the creators and cast endured BEFORE it even aired simply because a queer woman was creating it and a black woman was starring in it.

Teen Vogue took young people seriously. It's impossible to overstate how important, how rare, and how profoundly needed that is.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

Ask any of your favorite Black women writers from a decade ago why their bylines stopped appearing, and you’ll likely hear the same response: There is no place for us in media. In TV. In publishing or academia. For the majority of us, there’s no place but gone.

Teen Vogue has shown that you can do courageous, accountability political journalism *and* get huge engagement while doing so. And they've just decided to throw that all away. This is an unbelievably grim day for journalism.
