Yes, but they DO create profits for the rich.

Among other things.

Any Martian colony would have to be built underground. Sounds like an unappealing place to live.

If you haven’t seen it, Kelly & Zach Weinersmith’s book β€œA City on Mars” analyzes the myriad challenges with trying to build a colony on another planet.

Yes, the cosmic ray issue will be a problem for anyone wanting to move to another planet. I am curious to see what long term issues arise for astronauts who spent significant time at the ISS.

And any planet with intelligent life is probably much further away than Proxima Centauri.

I agree that it seems very unlikely. It would require some technology we can’t imagine (hyperspace travel?) or a commitment to spending years in transit. If I did the math right (a big question) accelerating and decelerating at g would require 120 years.

So, no property taxes for my wealthy father, but yes to property taxes for my son with a family of 4? Make it make sense.

My belief is that life is probably common, but life capable of interplanetary travel and radio communication may be rare. And we don’t know what the lifespan of a civilization is. It could be that there have been other civilizations in our region of the galaxy, but they may be gone by now.

At the time I discounted this, although I found it interesting that the shepherds could imagine there are 11 dimensions. However, a few years later string theory posited 10 or 11 dimensions, and the story became much more plausible.

Back in the 70s I saw a TV program which interviewed Basque shepherds in Spain who claimed to have met aliens in the Pyrenees. When asked how they traveled through space, the shepherds said they were told that there are actually 11 dimensions, and the alien ship β€œrotates” through those dimensions.

ICE zip-tying and detaining children isn’t β€œenforcement,” it’s *state cruelty.*

The 8th Amendment prohibits β€œcruel and unusual punishment.” That protection extends through the 5th & 14th to all human beings on U.S. soil.

This is unconstitutional, unlawful, and morally depraved.

FULL STOP.

When I was a teen my friend Pete got together a group to cut school and go down to the Stone Pony to see Bruce, back before he was famous. I didn’t go because I had a test. Now I kick myself, but I didn’t know what I was missing.

There is a video on IG of Cruz on the plane back from Greece, calling an aide to have the aide go see if Cruz’s boat survived the flood.

Saw a post on IG by a guy who sat next to Ted Cruz on his flight back from Greece last weekend, with video to back it up. At some point, Cruz called an aide to have the aide go check if his boat survived the flood.

In β€œGuns, Germs, and Steel”, Jared Diamond notes that in his experience people from β€œprimitive” cultures, such as New Guinea, adapt to modern life much more quickly than people raised in a β€œmodern” culture adapt to living in a primitive environment.

Older Adults Outnumber Children in 11 States and Nearly Half of U.S. Counties The U.S. population age 65 and older rose by 3.1% (to 61.2 million) while the population under age 18 decreased by 0.2% (to 73.1 million) from 2023 to 2024.

Gotta love how the GOP talks about how need to raise the birth rate while ignoring the impacts that cuts to Medicaid, rising home prices, and increasing income inequality have on people’s ability to raise children.

You spoke at a conference I attended, and I asked you about education in the U.S. Your response has stuck with me. You said that we have three educational systems in this country: 1 for the elites who become bankers and politicians; 1 to train the workers; and 1 that keeps children off the streets.
