Swap yes/no queries for ones that encourage elaboration: Instead of “Did you like the event?” → try “What stood out to you about the event?” 3. Listen actively and acknowledge. Show engagement with small affirmations (“That’s interesting,” “I hadn’t thought of it that way”) and follow-up questions that build on what’s been shared. 4. Share thoughtfully, not excessively. Balance curiosity with reciprocity. Respond to what they say by adding your own story or perspective that complements theirs — a conversational give-and-take. 5. Remember and revisit what you learn. Take mental (or even written) notes of key details — names, hobbies, or milestones — and refer to them later. A simple callback in your next chat can make someone feel truly valued.

The KWL method isn’t just for classrooms—it’s a mindset for connection. Start with what you know, ask what you want to know, and reflect on what you’ve learned. Whether you’re teaching, leading, or just talking, curiosity turns small talk into meaningful dialogue.

Bringing value means making things better because you were there. Don’t just work hard—create impact. Solve problems, lift others, and leave systems stronger. Evaluate your worth not by effort, but by the change that remains when you’re gone.
