Is the @ec.europa.eu in a toxic relationship with big polluters?
Our latest analysis by @silviap.bsky.social reveals a striking pattern: the petrochemical industryβs private "wishlist" is becoming Europe's political reality. Progress is moving in reverse β¬οΈ[1/5]
This is an interesting look at the PFAS court cases. It compares PFAS to asbestos, but notes differences in how liability (& blame) can be traced.

The forever chemicals court cases continue to pile up

The government knew PFAS was toxic and "likely" persistent.
The chemical manufacturers knew more.
But these are fire fighting foams, so it could be easy to get the tradeoffs wrong with incomplete info

The experts on these chemicals talked about ski waxes when they agreed to globally ban a group of forever chemicals.
They agreed the waxes weren't "essential" uses.

Except that it is a political choice to stop global warming, in tandem with (or instead of) other goals.

Hey #academicsky is anyone teaching a first-year undergrad 'intro to critical thinking / method-ish' type of module?

This is very near where I'm from.
It's a tiny town that's been through a lot: mines closing and killing the town, then reopening after it had found other ways forward.
Everyone will know someone hurt or killed.
So shocking it even makes the BBC.

Most plastics, chemicals, artificial fertilisers, pesticides & synthetic fabrics are made from fossil fuels & they emit pollution throughout their life cycle, from extraction to processing to use & disposal. Fossil fuels give birth to so many major pollution sources.

An American called Canada "America light," and "Canada's hat."
Not so diplomatic
Every year, I ask students to do a logframe for a project they'd like to see. This year's entries:
- ending period poverty
- improving access to nutritious food
- protecting women in clubs
- supporting mental health
It's a great list, but also worrying in a way.
Production Is ending... in the US.
This might be about production costs rather than the environment or health.

I've gotta admit - this was a tough meeting.
There was procedural delay after procedural delay. We talked about state sovereignty more than science.
Diplomatic norms, practices, and niceties seemed fragile. I just haven't seen this before, not like this.
It's a great idea.
It also shows that company take back schemes aren't working.
There's still more and more e-waste than ever.
