I challenged my students to dress up for extra credit, and I lead by example. (Also I love collecting the expressions from students as I march across campus. Some smile. Some whisper. Some--the few also in costume--make eye contact and nod knowingly.)

Reread Watership Down (for the umpteenth time, but not for at least 20 years) and still loved it.

Tales from Watership Down, which was nice for completion, but also made me wish for a compilation of only El-ahrairah stories.

John Scalzi's When the Moon Hits Your Eye. Biting (ha) commentary on contemporary culture, even with the most improbable set-up. I went in expecting to giggle, and ended up nodding and wincing. In a good way.

1. Rajma, from a NYT Tejal Rao recipe, modified with paneer b/c why wouldn't you.
2. Pumpkin bread, my recipe, b/c it's not too sweet & tastes like autumn, which used to mean cool weather inbound, hurray.
3. Spouse's split pea soup, yellow peas, pancetta or bacon, not ham.

The scene: a cat tree with several levels. A big fluffy black cat with green eyes sits on the penultimate level. His ears are back. Something is amiss! Below him, on the next level down and almost directly beneath him, sits a small, very petite shorthair black cat with wide yellow eyes. She looks like trouble.

National Black Cat Day! Tinycat & Murdercat share the cat-tree, a momentous occasion, b/c no one is hissing, biting, or fear-peeing because she's been pounced on by someone 2x her weight. (The very next moment, she started clawing the tree, and lo, those things came to pass, as foretold.)

One of my favorite students was from Honolulu. I had her for two quarters, and she always brought these to me after breaks. Husband has nut allergies, so the macadamia shortbreads are all mine.

I read and loved The Tainted Cup and A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennet--murder mysteries *like* Sherlock Holmes but not (to me, anyway) a direct reskinning, in a fantasy/magico-industrial world.. The world building is solid, there are kaiju! -- and I enjoyed the characters.

I feel this. Here we have one old lady cat who gets monthly solencia, one middle-aged boy on chemo/prednisolone for...as long as they work? He's almost 10? Could be years. And a 6 yr old who needs his damned dental (tomorrow) that required bloodwork first. Yeah.

Same w/ the trilogy, and then the Rorys and the Weep. The worst was the time I had to write a whole book over the summer, b/n quarters, which is when I learned I don’t write well to outlines and I can rewrite a third of a book in 3 weeks.

Yeah, well, first it has to sell. 😂 (and while I would like that to happen, ngl, there's a dread of the editing/marketing/what comes after).

Fact. I managed a book a year ago, and landed myself right back in burnout. FFS.

Murdercat and Mean People Got my very first fuck off and die comment (literally, that's what they said) from a total stranger the other week on Bluesky, because I said hey, check your titers on measles/mumps/rubella if you're of a certain age and get a booster if you need one, while we can still get vaccines. (I turned out to be immune to rubella, but not the other two, so I very quickly rectified that situation.
