I canโ€™t believe how much less stressful academia is when you arenโ€™t trying to finish a PhD

I canโ€™t decide whether this is more or less surprising and exciting that Takahashi

Students can pick up on underlying positive energy even when we feel like we arenโ€™t showing it or donโ€™t even have it. Itโ€™s really incredible.

New academic year, new institution, new role. I am no longer with the National Park Service and I am grateful to be a #postdoc for FIUโ€™s Institute of Environment. Iโ€™d love to connect with others working across sectors or navigating #earlycareer research in these uncertain times.

Iโ€™ve learned that if ChatGPT doesnโ€™t know the answer to the coding issue after two or three iterations, it never will and itโ€™s best to abandon course. Hope you find good help from your human supporters!

I remember there was also a time when everyone assumed machine learning meant artificial neural networks (because that was the big Silicon Valley-driven innovation of the day). What we are seeing is part of a totally predictable problematic pattern but on a much wider scale

(And I do agree with your point about the trend of de-centering and de-valuing the people doing the work)

We could say the same thing about machine learning. Itโ€™s not very specific and includes techniques with a wide range of complexity. Years ago machine learning was the buzz word. Now we just have a bigger vague bucket that was made to include the hottest innovation of the day.

One of the other big differences I noticed was how much more time they spent on Dulcy night 2. Itโ€™s like they swapped their Gabbie airtime for Dulcy

Just got home from an inspiring week at the NITMB celebrating Dr. Ricardo Cortez, biofluid dynamics, and math modeling education. Grateful for the invitation and reminders of the value of creativity, kindness, and collaboration when building a career in research and training.

Robert Francis Prevost was born in Chicago on 14 September 1955, the son of Louis Marius Prevost and Mildred Martรญnez.[4] His father, who was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and school administrator,[5] was of French and Italian descent, and his mother of Spanish descent.[6] As a child, Prevost served as an altar boy at St. Mary of the Assumption Church on the far South Side of Chicago.[7] He completed his secondary studies at the minor seminary of the Order of St. Augustine in 1973. Prevost earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics at Villanova University in 1977.[8]
