I completely understand that. I did the same for years and only recently, have I felt safe enough to be this way instead

I wish I had any of that kind of prepations but I'll often find my players love the railroad improv style to a story and I tend to mold events and characters based on where they want to go

I love that it's such an effective method for you! By the sounds of things, you really put your all into it
