If we could somehow get a director from the 70's who had not seen a film in fifty years, I think we could get a really good Silent Hill movie. But... Uhhh... Not until then.

It equates all depictions of mental health into one big, ugly pile. And people want to avoid all those different classifications like the plague. Because if you're one? ...then people might think you're all of them. Shame-based avoidance is strong in the Puritan Isles.

And it gets worse! Because we look at things like 'the insanity defense' as a 'get out of jail free' card, thanks to media, so actual insanity is depicted as just lying. Ex-girlfriends? 'That girl was crazy.' It's one of the problems of media being so utterly lodged in American culture.

It's not that weird. Resistance to classification because of attached stigma. The US has a major problem with equating all mental health issues, into two tiers: 'problem' and 'criminal'. If you some "some mental problems," you could be bipolar or ADHD. If you're 'crazy' though, you belong in jail.

It's both the easiest and hardest part of being in the brass section.
