We really do no longer have the 'mess' of reading stuff available - comics, magazines, newspapers etc (particularly in libraries where budgets budgetted...) - and the 'easyness' of everyday casual visible reading is something I note as well.

(Related: the ketchup bottle! the earliest common text!)

The Secret Garden on 81st Street: A Modern Retelling of… The Secret Garden with a twist: in this follow-up to Me…

But related, I'd say maybe the Lauren Child illustrated Pippi Longstocking; the Madeline / Eloise pic books might be funnnnn; also the epic Babysitters club comics; ditto the lovely graphic novel of Secret Garden - www.goodreads.com/book/show/54...

Maybe *just* if her reading age is high - but I'd suggest probably as a bedtime / together read to start. There's some big emotions / complex themes (bereavement, grief, loss etc). If she's independent reading Malory Towers kind of vibes & is ready for a step up, then she'd be in the right area.

6yo "almost all the books are about BOYS saving something. I want books about GIRLS".
Recommendations please for strong girl characters (her reading age is far higher than 6) - Rainbow Grey was a big win

Coffee bags, one is Tom of Finland with a Tom of Finland image on it. The other is Moomin with a Moomin leaning on a blueberry. More details: in the photograph of two "Art Roast" coffee bags on the shelf of a store with prices in euros. One of the bags is large and black and says HEAVY DUTY dark roast coffee beans, exclusive blend by Robert [I can't read it, it's in script]. The other is blue and says Blueberry coffee.

Very, very excited to have been sent a copy of graphic novel The Lost Daughter of Sparta by @felicia.day, illustrated by Rowan MacColl, which imagines the story of Helen of Troy’s forgotten sister.

5 panel comic

P1: Title. "HOW TO DRAW A HORSE"

P2: "SKETCH A SHAPE LIKE THIS"

Beneath, we see a pencil sketch of a kinda squooshed rectangtangtangtangtangle

P3: "TURN IT INTO A HEAD"

The shape is now a horse head. This shape, it gives head.

P4: "NOW, COMPLETE THAT HORSE!"

We dolly back to see the glorious complete abomination. The head simply has four legs jutting out of it.

P5: A wide panel, showing the crime against creation frolicking through a field. A blue sky filled with fluffy pink clouds fills the background. On the top left, a single word

"congratulation"

Horses. Up there with bicycles as the bane of many an artist.

However, I figured out a foolproof way of drawing them, and I want to share that with you! 😊

I am learning how to make a telephone notepad today
(honestly I really hope somebody's done a book / thesis / fifteen hour deep dive audio about all the 'craft pages from back in the day publications that teach you how to do stuff that nobody would do today' because this stuff is outstanding).
