Kammen hopes to contribute to efforts towards a society powered mostly by fusion, both solar and terrestrial. Fusion does not emit carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases, making it a promising clean energy source.

“Clean and sustainable energy should be made available to all, not just the privileged,” Kammen says. “…I want to see us close the electricity access gap for the nearly 700 million people on the planet who still don’t have access to electricity.”

With dual appointments in @hopkinsengineer.bsky.social and SAIS, Kammen’s research combines advanced modeling of energy systems with practical implementation, such as designing mini-grids for rural communities and decarbonizing residential water heating in California.

Cummings currently leads an innovative intervention trial assessing the use of Wolbachia-infected mosquitos to combat dengue in Brazil. The ongoing trial aims to refine the best approach to introduce this intervention and assess its effectiveness.

“This is a pivotal moment for the field of epidemiology,” says Cummings. “We’re being challenged to adapt and realign in response to what we’ve learned not only from recent crises, but from rapid advances in science and technology.”
