Today is #RareDiseaseDay & we are celebrating by highlighting the invaluable work of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN)! Formed in 2020, it aims to solve the most challenging medical mysteries using advanced technologies. In this thread, we will highlight their use of the #zebrafish model. 1/5 πŸ§ͺ

Today is #RareDiseaseDay

Through EB Research Partnership, families, scientists, and supporters are pushing research forward, pioneering progress in EB and helping reshape what’s possible for rare diseases.

It’s not a matter of if.
It’s a matter of time.

Where patients live matters for access to gene therapy Gene therapies have the potential to cure some diseases, but they are extraordinarily expensive. Location can also be a big hurdle for patients seeking this specialized care.

The Supreme Court has struck down Trump’s unlawful tariffs, which we've been paying for about a year now. This is good news for the American people - and it's the latest proof that this president, no matter what he says, can be stopped.

There’s only 1 person in Congress who doesn’t trade stocks, doesn’t take corporate PAC money, and has a public schedule. That’s me. And it should be the standard.

A four panel comic, from left to right:

1960s
LIFE IS BASED ON DNA, WHICH USES RNA TO MAKE PROTEINS THAT DO STUFF.

1980s
ALSO, THE RNA DOES SOME STUFF ITSELF, WHICH IS WEIRD.

2000s
THERE ARE 50
MANY KINDS OF RNA. IT'S DOING SO MUCH STUFF!

2020s
LIFE IS A SEETHING MASS OF RNA THAT SOMETIMES USES DNA TO TAKE NOTES.

WHAT DO THE PROTEINS DO?
ERRANDS FOR RNA.

It’s an RNA world. RNA is posited to be the first genetic material, arising 4 billion years ago. It can store information and act as an enzyme. Eventually, it duplicated its information into a more stable form, DNA.

"Nothing could be less inviting than the first appearance. A broken field of black basaltic lava, thrown into the most rugged waves, and crossed by great fissures, is everywhere covered by stunted, sun-burnt brushwood, which shows little signs of life. The dry and parched surface, being heated by the noon-day sun, gave to the air a close and sultry feeling, like that from a stove: we fancied even that the bushes smelt unpleasantly. Although I diligently tried to collect as many plants as possible, I succeeded in getting very few; and such wretched-looking little weeds would have better become an arctic than an equatorial Flora."

In celebration of #DarwinDay, here are his decidedly mixed first impressions after landing on the GalΓ‘pagos (17 Sept 1835; from 'the Voyage' Chap X):

"Nothing could be less inviting..."

In just a few moments, I will vote against the so-called SAVE America Act and I am a strong no. That's because this bill would place unnecessary burdens on millions of women and eligible citizens to register to vote and make their voices heard. It is un-American & undermines our democracy.
