Thank you, Charlotte. She spoke highly of your work, including in that fabulous Kenyon Review interview - but I didn’t know this mentoring history. Our own books were so entwined. What connections Varuna has also made. ❀️

Thank Ryan, I’m far down the Japanese lit rabbit hole. Not a Murakami fan but find Mishima intriguing. Like Ogawa. Love Tanizaki and Kawabata.

Bumblebee population increases 116 times over in 'remarkable' Scotland project β€˜The sound of traffic and a uniform sea of barley have been replaced by the most beautiful meadows, full of wildflowers, young saplings and the buzz of bees’

"Bumblebee population increases 116 times over in 'remarkable' Scotland rewilding project."

Read that again: **116** times.

Why are we STILL having to argue the case for rewilding??

Yes, I do know Kerr’s work and agree. He’s interesting on the repression of a thread of robust vulgarity in Japan’s history (though I’m a Tanizaki fan and that vulgarity is a reason I love his work). And he’s good on buildings.

Some great starter packs here. I’m now looking for lovers of Japanese literature and culture, Australian historians, environmental historians, and any interesting resources on literature from South America or Asia. Any tips or leads appreciated!

David Dyer’s Kingdom of Dust - an alternative history of the Apollo 11 landing with bonus Norman Maileresque journalist character, alongside Buzz and Joan Aldrin - is the most enjoyable Australian book I’ve read this year (just out).

Nightsky | hctr.dev See live conversations from all over Bluesky as a dynamic night sky

I made a thing!

I was playing around with the AT protocol and as a little experiment I made a website that visualises activity around Bluesky: nightsky.hctr.dev

It listens to all new posts and shows them as little stars across a night sky πŸŒƒ

Every star is someone, somewhere, posting something

Oxford relying on β€˜Deliveroo-style’ contracts with most tutorials not taught by full-time staff Leading university accused of relying on young academics employed on gig-economy terms

This is actually full of good reporting on casualization of UKHE at even the most prestigious institutions. And the fact that the Observer pressed Christ Church directly on ad wording, and then reported on the college's sidestepping is nothing short of astonishing.
