The WI and Girlguiding have been pressured to exclude trans women – yet the law is clear as mud | Jess O’Thomson Since the supreme court decision, organisations have faced lobbying and legal threats. But trans people are protected by discrimination law too, says Jess O’Thomson of the Good Law Project

“This is a moment that requires bravery. Organisations that value trans people should know not just that the law is on their side – but so, also, are many people who will step up to defend them if they have the courage to take a stand” – @jessothomson.co.uk

One of the first cases following the Supreme Court’s decision on the definition of sex under the Equality Act has found it didn’t decide which changing room a trans person should use.

Police look into claims Reform UK broke electoral law in Farage campaign Party denies councillor’s claim it falsely reported expenses during Farage’s run to become Clacton MP last year

The MP for Clacton should probably spend some more time in his constituency... but did he spend too much money getting elected?

I've just used the Good Law project website to send emails to my three local NHS Trusts about them giving Palantir access to NHS data.
It's really easy to do

Screenshot of a paragraph from the judgment, with the final sentence highlighted:
“797. After that comment the court explained that a person with gender reassignment as a protected characteristic could pursue a claim of direct or indirect discrimination, or of harassment, if the circumstances so warranted. There was no qualification to it to the effect that that was not applicable in, for example, the context of a single sex space under Part 5 of the Act. If their decision had been that all trans persons must be excluded from the changing rooms or toilets for the sex they identify with because it was not the sex assigned at birth, and may also be excluded from the changing rooms or toilets of their biological sex, that in our view certainly does impact on their rights under section 7.”

Today’s judgment in the Sandie Peggie case says exactly what we have been saying – For Women Scotland does not require a trans bathroom ban:

Rules on single-sex spaces pose risk to trans people’s mental health, UK charities say Fifteen organisations sign letter expressing deep concern over EHRC guidance being considered by ministers

“Mental health services should be places of refuge, not risk, and equality protections must strengthen, not erode, the conditions that enable people to feel safe and supported.”

Mental health charities have warned Bridget Phillipson about the upcoming EHRC guidance:

Excluding trans people won’t stop you getting sued | Good Law Project Girl Guiding and the Women’s Institute have announced that they will now exclude trans women and girls after legal threats – but organisations can and should remain inclusive.

The Supreme Court only ruled on whether people with a GRC count as women under the Equality Act.

You have to be 18 to get a GRC.

But the Guides say they’re kicking out trans girls – under 18s – as a result. It doesn’t track. So why are they doing it?
